Are our pediatricians board certified?

[Drs Grogg and Collins are board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. They are members of the American academy of Pediatrics. Dr Grogg is a fellow of pediatrics and carries the additional initials F.A.C.O.P ]

How soon after birth will the pediatrician see your baby?

[The nurses at SMH will notify us of your new arrival; we will come to the hospital each day your child is in SMH. We generally do a head to toe examination on the first morning your child is at SMH.]

When will the first office visit be?

[The first office visit will depend on various factors about your child's condition and any problems that may occur in the hospital. Generally, the first visit will be at 2 weeks of age. This is when we give the first shot, Hepatitis B. We will determine if your child needs an early follow-up visit prior to this 2 week visit .]

What is early follow-up?

[Early follow-up is a visit usually within 48-72 hours after discharge from the hospital. This is an early visit to follow up on any outstanding issues identified during your child's stay at SMH. It could include problems like feeding problems, jaundice, etc. that require closer follow-up. If your child only stays 24 hours in the hospital, then an early follow-up visit is indicated.]

What happens if there is an emergency at birth?

[There are neonatologist , sick baby specialist, that respond to emergency c-sections and premature babies. If your child requires respiratory support at birth they will respond to the call and will be the doctors in the hospital if admission to the neonatal intensive care is warranted .]

What happens if there is there is an emergency after we go home from the hospital?

[If there is a life threatening emergency you should call 911 otherwise call us at our office number to get the doctor on call. Non-emergent calls should be reserved for normal business hours. Fever greater than 100.4 rectal, breathing difficulties, and refusal to feed require prompt examination at the ER after hours or our office during the day. We do not take walk ins but regularly will see sick kids if you call by 3pm]

[The first vaccine is given at 2 weeks and is the Hepatitis B vaccine.]

What is the vaccination schedule?

[The vaccination schedule is the recommended and safe schedule of vaccination determined by many healthcare groups and endorsed by the CDC - Centers for Disease Control - the government agency responsible for preventing the spread of disease in the United States.]

Why should I get vaccinated on the schedule and not later when my child is older?

[Your child will be exposed to many new diseases just by living outside of your womb; some of them can cause devastating disease if not protected at an early age. The schedule is designed to ensure maximum compliance and potential protection from many pathogens that can cause diseases like hepatitis, meningitis, tetanus etc. If we could get away with vaccinating later we would do recommend this as practice however, your child could potential be exposed to these pathogens before one year of age. ]

What if I refuse to vaccinate my child, will I be treated like a criminal?

[We will give you information about vaccination, answer questions about vaccination and have you sign an informed consent form . Vaccination is important preventative part of comprehensive care of your children.]

Which formula should I give my child?

[We recommend breast milk as the best formula for your child. If this is not an option for you, we generally recommend  Enfamil or Simalac Brands as they are the closest formulas to breast milk. WIC supplies Carnation Good Start and Al Soy . ]

What do the doctors feel about alternative or herbal medication for children?

[We generally do not recommend alternative medicines as they are not standardized for infants and children's body size .]

[Antibiotics should only be reserved for bacterial infections and should not be used for colds, green snot, and other viruses.]

Is a prenatal visit necessary for my child to be seen by our practice?

[Prenatal visits are always welcome but not required. Notify SMH Labor and Delivery that your pediatrician is us at the time of check in or pre-registration.]
